1 World Drivers’ Championship – All drivers

2000 - World Drivers' Championship - All drivers

Michael Schumacher’s 19-point margin of victory belies how close the title battle was for much of the year (below). Also note how many of Benetton (Giancarlo Fisichella / Alexander Wurz) and BAR’s (Jacques Villeneuve / Ricardo Zonta) points were scored by their lead drivers.

Mika Hakkinen overturned a 24-point deficit to take the championship lead, only to lose it again after engine failure in Indianapolis. David Coulthard’s early challenge faded and was destroyed after he was taken out in the Italian Grand Prix.

Had the post-2003 points system been used in 2000, Hakkinen would have been no closer to Schumacher.

4 World Constructors’ Championships – All constructors

BAR bounced back from their hideously embarassing debut season by racking up as many points as (declining) Benetton and out-scoring Jordan. Jaguar, on the other hand, scraped just four points after a strong 1999 as Stewart. Ferrari took a second consecutive constructors’ title.

McLaren’s late problems and Schumacher’s run of four consecutive wins let Ferrari sneak the constructors’ title at the final round.

6 Drivers’ Average Start Positions

2000 - Drivers' Average Start Positions

Although Schumacher took more pole positions, Hakkinen had a slightly superior average starting position – but what is really remarkable is just how close the top three were, and how Rubens Barrichello wasn’t quite close enough.

Fisichella started nearly three places higher than team-mate Wurz every time out, and Jenson Button, in his first season, couldn’t match Ralf Schumacher over the whole season.

7 Drivers’ Top 3 Qualifying Positions

2000 - Drivers' Top 3 Qualifying Positions

Given the domination of the McLarens and Ferraris, Trulli did well o get two front-row starts. Schumacher took more poles but both McLaren drivers took more top-three starts – suggesting they had a more consistently quick car.

Both Sauber drivers qualified in Brazil but did not take the start, hence the discrepancy between this graph and number six.

9 Drivers’ Points per Round and per Finish

2000 - Drivers' Points per Round and per Finish

Schumacher’s two startline crashes reduced his points per race average but his considerably higher points per race average indicate just how competitive his F-2000 was.

10 Drivers’ DNFs (totals)

2000 - Drivers' DNFs (totals)

One-quarter of all starts in 2000 ended with mechanical failure, with a further one in seven ending in incident.

11 Drivers’ DNFs (by driver)

2000 - Drivers' DNFs (by driver)

The Prost duo of Nick Heidfeld and Jean Alesi suffered appalling reliability in a car that was well off the pace to start with, hence their failure to score points. Jordan also had a poor year for reliability after a strong 1999. Mika Hakkinen was the most consistent driver, only failing to go the distance when his car let him down.
