Miami International Autodrome

The Miami International Autodrome will host the first Miami Grand Prix in May 2022.

The temporary circuit was designed by Apex and Formula 1. It is being built on the car park and roads surrounding the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, which is home to the Miami Dolphins National Football League team.

The city has previously played host to IndyCar and Formula E rounds, and the Homestead oval is a fixture on the NASCAR schedule. However the Miami promoters’ plans to bring Formula 1 to the area was met with significant local opposition.

Efforts to situate the race downtown, overlooking the waterfront, were repeatedly frustrated. Several different track configurations were mooted, including one which passed through the PortMiami tunnel, another around the AmericanAirlines Arena, a version which looped around Bayfront Park and one which ventured further into PortMiami. But by 2019 local opposition had killed off hopes of a downtown race.

The promoters’ focus instead switched 20 kilometres north to the Hard Rock Stadium, owned by Stephen Ross, who agreed to fund construction of a track. A 5.4 kilometre circuit was laid out using the car park and surrounding roads, and a deal to host a race in 2022 was announced in April 2021.

Miami will join the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas as one of two American venues on the current calendar. F1 has raced at nine other venues in the USA since the world championship began in 1950.
