  1. Decently exciting in the end, but overall a farce on certain fronts.

Like the fact we didn’t reach full race distance. If we had stuck with 78 laps or 2 hours it would have been much simpler. Instead we had a ‘time limited race of about 90 minutes I’d guess

And in these technology obsessed times why is it Time + 1 lap!! We managed perfectly well for years. Is it because we have fireworks for night races?

  2. 8/10 before the red flag, 4/10 after the red flag
    So 6/10 overall.

    1. 9/10 for seeing everyone esp. lewis suffer behind Fernando.

No matter who you are . Baby,
Fernando is faster than you !!

  3. Some drama, some farce, some procession. 6

  4. 5 and im generous.
Not only with the farce with the rain but also for the Stewart’s not giving penalty to max for cutting the line.
    Completely farce.

    1. @bluechris Was really close but based off the replay that was shown from Charles car I don’t think Max actually went over it.

I’d like to see it again but from that one replay we saw from Charles car I think it was fine. And I think Charles & Ferrari would have been more vocal in protesting it if they felt he went over the line.

    2. Yes, that was widely overlooked.

This new race director thing is just not working for me.

  5. 4/10, complete boredom once the track dried. Was a 7/10 prior to that.

  6. 1. Happy for Perez, but if you can’t pass on this track in these cars, it’s not a race.

Gasly managed to pass quite fine though, and without DRS even.
These were the only highlights of the race for me however.
Worst of the lows for me was the TV director, who should have been fired instantly on saturday already.

  7. It rained. That was the most exciting part of the procession. Be done with this anachronistic event. I cannot call it a race.

Must laugh at Alonso effectively pushing his team mate out of the points.

    1. Rain kinda made it worse. Not that the rain itself did anything, but that’s the issue. It made it even more disappointing that nothing happened at all.

You need the rain to come mid-way through. That way, you get more interesting strategy.

    2. @psynrg It was Hamilton more so than Alonso that prevented Ocon from getting into the points. Alonso pulled 4 seconds on Hamilton once he got the hurry-up.

      1. Why should HAM have sped up too, when anyways unable to pass Alonso and just saving Ocons race (who got the penalty for crashing with him before)? But Alonsos bunching of the field mainly caused that Ocon lost the places.

        1. Not sure it was being said that Ham should have sped up. It was just a statement of fact.

      2. That’s true, but by then HAM had no incentive to speed up himself, and was probably enjoying the karma.
But HAM shouldn’t really complain about ALO because:
1- If the person in front is going deliberately slow it should be easier to pass him.
2- MERC did exactly this tactic at Monaco before (although that day it didn’t work for HAM that day).

  8. Gave it a 2. F1 chooses to hold a race where overtaking is actually impossible. The race would have been interesting seeing Leclerc trying to fight back but ultimately the race is just processional nonsence. Only the weather and Leclercs pit stop drama stopped it being a 1. Incredibly boring circuit with all the pretty buildings that made it nice replaced with ugly tower blocks.

    1. Ask Gasly…

  9. Ferrari absolutely napping when it comes to strategy. I don’t understand why Verstappen wasn’t even reported for crossing the pit exit.

Overall, the race was a 7

    1. That would be because he didn’t cross it.

      1. Oh, but he did! And went straight on the racing line. From all the tracks, I think this is the track where crossing the pit lane means by far a possible gain, simply because crossing the pit lane line means the car is in center of the track and nobody from behind has any chance anymore to even try an overtake.

      2. Ferrari with their protest disagree but don’t expect Red Bull to ever receive a penalty

  10. That was a very good Monaco race ;) Now off to Indianapolis 500 to watch the best race of the year!

  11. 2. Happy for the wingman. Luckily Sainz was in between, so he was allowed to win. Boring race tough.

Surprised you’re more interested in that instead of your man being trolled by Alonso….

      1. you cant pass in monaco, unless 3 seconds or more quicker. even the armchair expert would know. alonso did nothing but push ocon out of points. quite funny

        1. of course you can. Look at verstappen two years back.. or look at Gasly today.
But you have to have balls to do it..

          1. Gasly was on different tyres.

And the only overtake of VER I remember was the one where he crashed into the barriers in turn 1. Thats what happens when you got the balls but lack in some upper parts of the body, but back then it was his rookie season or the one after.

And ofc one can overtake when the driver in front makes a mistake, apart from that you need to be 3s quicker at least.

@RomTrain; your memory is rather selective. Verstappen had quite cleverly already overtaken a couple of others, before he came up on Grosjean. That last name alone says it all. That guy is being accused of reverting to his old habits even over in Indy now.

I gave it a 7. The delays were a bit farcical but it’s always good to see the cars going round Monaco.

  13. As a Monaco race, they rarely get better. I’m bitterly disappointed as a Ferrari fan, but they messed up on their own accord. Perez executed this race to perfection, deserved winner.

9/10 at the start, 5/10 in the middle, 8/10 at the end.

  14. 10. I disagreed with the delayed start but I can’t hold that against the race itself. Watching the spectacular overtakes and saves in the wet was brilliant and I honestly had no idea who was going to win at the end. There is something really special about Monaco and I’m glad we had such a good race here.

“and I honestly had no idea who was going to win at the end.”

Haha, best laugh I’ve had for a long time. Comment of the day!

  15. A 1. Just a procession after the track dried out. Only way to have an exciting race here is to spray water on the track which is what they need to do to come back.

  16. Merry-go-round despite the wet and changing conditions. I’ll be glad if they let go this “race track”, totally unfit for racing.

  17. 8/10 as I really enjoyed that race once it got going.

Yes fine overtaking was unlikely at the end but you can never say never as you never know what is going to happen & so I was literally on the edge of my seat over that final 20-ish minutes. Enjoyed every second of it.

    1. Same here gave it a 9/10.

  18. Better than usual for a Monaco race, but it was spoilt by some bad decisions from the race director.

    1. Coventry Climax
      29th May 2022, 23:28

Yep, like having a safety car while cleaning up after Mick’s mistake and then have it red flagged to sort the barriers. Incomprehensible decision.

  19. Doesn’t it just warm the heart watching a bunch of southern English men chant the Austrian anthem under the podium? Farcical. Dull / unethical / soul-less / characterless team!

    1. Their success get to you much?

  20. I have very mixed feelings. It seems like a Emilia Romagna GP if it was more entertaining.

    I. Part: Wet race (10/5): Gasly in inters gave us some tricky overtake and there was saves and mistakes but overall it was boring.

II. Part: Pit stops (10/9): Ferrari… why? Anyway, it was good to see the two type of tyre changes. We got wet->inter->slick and wet->slick and inter->slick strategies.

III. Part: After the red flag (10/2): You can’t overtake in this track. Zhou-Tsunoda saved from absolute borefest.

IV. Part: The last 10 Minutes (10/6): Some battle but since 2017 it was the most interesting Overtaken’t GP but still not enough. Even with ‘entertainment killer’ DRS.

Overall: 10/5,5. And 10/0 for TV director it was unwatchable in F1 and F2. Somebody collied, spun and caused a yellow flag? Ok than don’t show to audience. WHAT? What happened to Albon? What happened between Zhou and Tsunoda? The whole Ocon-Hamilton incident showed us only once. How overtook Latifi Zhou? They showed only one camera angle Verstappen crossing line?

  21. nice race.. it showed why Monaco just deserves a place on the calender.
A little rain in the last 5 minutes would have spiced things up even more.
    Nice, i enjoyed it!

    1. I’d have preferred a 1997-like race with rain at start, rain during the race, rain at the end!

I don’t know how to rate this one tbh. Very annoying delay at the start, but once it got going it was pretty decent. Especially enjoyed seeing Gasly’s overtakes early on, getting quite imaginative in places. Same with Hamilton a few laps later on. Very interesting to see the different strategies play out around the crossover as well. The Alonso train was a bit stupid though. I actually found the end quite exciting as well if I’m honest, because there was always the possibility, albeit small, that someone could have tried a move, and that was enough to keep my attention. Probably a 7/10, but by Monaco standards probably 8 or 8.5/10.

  23. What happened with Ferrari, especially LEC?? Didn’t understand anything from the TV coverage. On lap 16 LEC was 1st, 7sec ahead of PER, after 2 laps he pits too and he’s 4th, 12sec behind PER! I thought it was a mistake with the order. What happened that caused a 20sec loss in 2-3 laps??

    1. Pérez was in a tyre that esa 7 esconda per lap faster.

    2. Leclerc pitted twice in few laps.

I might say this is one of the exciting races if you are a neutral fan. There is typical Monaco safety car, lot of yellow flags, few blueflags compared to previous years. Alonso being hilariously pushing a bunch of guys feeling like a local cab drivers. Final 10mins definitely would have thrilled anyone, bcoz the top 4 were hardly within 2secs. People complain about overtakes but even a simple bruise at the corners might end up costly. A real test for drivers to showcase their skill.

  25. I’m very sorry, but this track must be wiped out of the calendar. Maybe it was a great track in the 1950s, but now is just a farce.
At one point ONE car (Alonso) blocked no less that 11 faster cars behind him, who were unable to pass because the track does not allow such maneuvers. It was ridiculous, this is not racing.

    1. Alonso blocked these cars not by being slower ( he was not, he set a really fast lap when told to created room for Ocon) but by beinig smart.

    2. It’s like watching Olympic 100m sprinters racing around a kindergarten track half-a-metre wide. Great, so you get to see the Olympic sprinters up close. But there isn’t any racing. There’s just a lot of over-sized cars trying not to hit things.

    3. In the 90s it was more reasonable to overtake here, it’s always been hard if you think about mansell being unable to overtake senna in 1992, but there were more happening; nowadays there’s hardly any even with a wet first part.

    4. You don’t have to watch if you don’t like Monaco, don’t turn om your TV. Don’t understand why people want to cancel this race just don’t watch it. F1 without Monaco is a big loss. I guess it’s negotiation tactics they will make a deal. Like Bernie said I would have allowed them a race for free but I’m happy they never asked for it

  26. Not terrible for Monaco. So that’d be a 4, I guess.

    5. And all those points are awarded for what happened before the red flag. The insufferable procession that followed it doesn’t even qualify as a race.

  28. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Monaco is hard enough in the dry, let alone the wet. Incredible that we had a period with drivers on full wet, inters and slicks at the same time! Hugely varied strategies and some pretty close fights. Perez held his nerve to the end despite Sainz breathing down his neck! Very happy for him but I feel for Leclerc. Ferrari really messed up his race. Gave it an 8.

  29. Timing graphics are faulty or missing altogether, especially in race-deciding moments…
No replay of controversial scenes (Ocon/Hamilton, Max/pit exit)…
Second year in a row with a quali decided by a red flag…

And WHY do we get two rolling starts when the standing start is always the most exciting part in a Monaco Grand Prix?

At some point, you have to feel like they’re trying to find out how far they can push the hardcore fans before they unsubscribe, really…

I’m pleased for Checo, but is this really supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport?
I love F1 but it’s driving me nuts!

    1. Then again we have to admit even with standing starts it’s a loooooong time since there are important overtakes.

  30. I don’t know, I impulsively gave it 4, but I see 2\3 of people gave it either 5, 6, 7, or even 8, that’s a lot!

I can only say I wasn’t impressed by the total lack of overtakes even in the wet, with gasly finding 2 unusual spots, but pretty much nothing else, and yes, there were some battles such as hamilton chasing ocon, where I thought: this is why monaco deserves a place on the calendar, normally when one is so close and faster there’s no chance to defend, but overall there was never any realistic possibility to overtake, that also goes for the end with the first 4 cars very close, it’s a thing to have a chance to defend, but another thing is when you can pretty much bet that unless the driver in front makes an error positions are frozen.

And then again I get annoyed when rain lasts so little or they insist running behind the safety car, see what a good race we got in 1997 because the ones in charge of the race weren’t such cowards and actually let them race in the heavy rain.

Probably a 5,5 is more fair considering monaco is a different track than others and there’s more reliance on strategy, VSC, SC and quali than on overtakes.

  31. 7/10. As many have said, pretty entertaining from the beginning but it did become dull after the red flag. There were one or two real overtakes but the fact that that overtakes cannot be done easily does build tension.

It’s a shame Ferrari messed up their strategies as they really did hand the race to Red Bull. Good to see Perez and Sains be the lead cars for a change.

I thought there was a possibility that one of the top 4 would try a spectacular move in the last 3/4 laps but I guess they all decided their teams had more to lose than gain.

  32. After the rain delay (boring in itself) it was just the same old boring race. Again what could have promised so much if the race had started on time despite the weather, turned out to be a damp squib with no-one understanding what was going on with indecisive Race Control. I don’t want to see huge accidents just racing in all conditions from the best drivers in the world. The Nanny State is taking over F1

  33. Started with an ordinary qualifying, progressed to not even starting, followed by wasting time for rain that wasn’t even falling, and finally the perfect example of why F1 should never try to call the Monaco event a “race.”
Nothing of note happened, which means it lived down to expectations yet again.

    3.
And 2.9 of those are for the rain.

Having said that – it would probably have been pretty decent if it had been held at any other venue….

  34. Cannot rate the race more than 5. Deducted one point for facepalm strategic blunders from Ferrari and one point for the overly cautious race director.
