Ricciardo: No regrets over decision to leave Renault for McLaren

RaceFans Round-up

In the round-up: Daniel Ricciardo says he’s not having any second thoughts about leaving Renault to join McLaren despite his current team’s improvement in form.

What they say

Ricciardo was asked if he regretted signing to join McLaren for 2021.

It’s obviously no disrespect to Renault and where I currently am but no, I don’t regret it.

Am I happy to see us progress? Absolutely. And you know all well and good if it means that we’ve got Renault as a competitor next year to push McLaren further then that’s I think that’s good for everyone. So, no, I’m not regretting it.

But I’m also not unhappy with the progress. I want to be racing at the front. And obviously every race in F1 is so important. So every chance I get to do it, the sooner the better.

So I am glad we’re making progress. And I feel a part of it which is important as well for me and I guess my growth as a driver. The team haven’t shut me out with anything. I’ve been doing simulator and all of it. So it’s it’s been really good to work with them.

I know for sure [it’s] bittersweet especially for some guys in the team to know that I can’t continue on after this year, but I’m going to give it a red hot crack till till the last day.

Comment of the day

Should F1 rethink its power unit rules in light of Honda’s decision to leave?

I hope F1 turn to a single supply ICE and let the teams and manufacturers plough their resources and branding into their own hybrid systems instead. Full EV is already done in Formula E so there is no point for F1 to do that.

Going back to pure ICE would not interest any manufacturer today. But staying hybrid, and put all emphasis on the hybrid technology rather than developing incredibly complicated and expensive ICEs, manufacturers could still be interested and we might get some real-world relevant technology out of it too.

  1. That’s a great COTD. Very interesting idea..!

    1. It’s a great one, and really gets me thinking about whether hybrid is the answer, or not.

Ultimately I think hybrid is, as always, difficult to sell. Sure the goals of hybrid engines are lofty, vastly improved efficiency and power delivery. But how do you make very expensive (qua weight, sound, technical difficulty) efficiency or reliability sexy anyway?

Honda was one of the reasons F1 stuck with the MGU-H, I remember the awkward presser where Tanabe-san said for Hondas continued involvement they in favour of the MGU-H. Now where are Honda anyway?

Meanwhile there is Ferrari, where Binotto (also present at that presser) said for Ferrari’s continued involvement in F1 the engine needs to be a competitive differentiator for teams. So it kind of makes the COTD a bit of a dream as I doubt Ferrari wouldn’t veto any plans to make it a one-engine competition.

      1. Sound is a furphy pedalled by the likes of Bernie.
Fear not, while the likes of Aramco (and the myriad other regimes and corporations utterly dependent on oil revenue represented by sticker or podium attendee) have a fist on the wallet, Liberty /FIA are unlikely to do anything ‘silly’ with engine spec again.

      2. I think you can make hybrid sexy @skipgamer by allowing development. Make it a charging engine with the drive itself being all electric.

        1. @zann
So f1osaurus, you’ve found a new name for one of your troll accounts?

        2. Yup, exactly. Electric drive charged by a stock range extending standardised ICE…and while we’re at it give the teams full range on how they deliver that electric power. Multiple drive units powering wheels independently allowing for the car equivalent of thrust vectoring maybe?!? No idea how you’d police traction control though :-)

          1. They should just give up on banning driver aids @jodrell, I don’t think there’s any evidence they make slow drivers closer to fast ones. Yes let the cars be smart and awesome.

        3. Ricardo may have made a huge mistake in leaving Renault to go to McLare, just as Renault seem to have dramatically improved and hit a sweet spot. Riccardo’s switch reminds me of the decision Sainz has made to
join a struggling Ferrari From an improving McLaren. Don’t think McLaren has as much potential as the Renaul.

          1. Ricci seems to follow the Alonso path.. although the friendly version.

  2. Ricciardo’s star has really gone up again. Of course as much about McLaren, but I’m almost as excited about what he can do with a McLaren Mercedes as I am about Alonso at Renault. How fun wouldn’t it be if he could legitimately fight with Red Bull in the future. Him and Norris should make for a very good combo.

  3. Ricciardo ran from a fight at Red Bull.

He could be the best of the rest, but he couldn’t compete with Verstappen.

a fight at red bull? deluded slightly are we? as far as everyone else can see there is no focus on the second car at RB.

      1. abananasplitz, you’re arguing with one of the other troll accounts that Oconomo is using to spam this forum with (much as he’ll try to deny it, the posting style is too similar to be a coincidence).

The best option at this rate is more likely to be to ask Keith to ban that user for breaking the site rules by creating sockpuppet accounts to spam this site.

        1. +1 There’s one troll on all the F1 sites, he posts full time 20 hours a day with different accounts. He just posts anything to get a reply, and replies to himself even. I wish @keithcollantine would just ban multiple accounts.

        2. +1 There’s one troll on all the F1 sites, he posts full time 20 hours a day with different accounts. He just posts anything to get a reply, and replies to himself even. Ans his name is Anon, F1osaurus, Zann…..
I wish @keithcollantine would just ban multiple accounts.

          1. Oconomo, you rather gave yourself away with your rather obvious repetition of the same stock phrases, suhc as the ones about how the current Red Bull car was “only the fifth fastest car” when praising Max Verstappen’s performances firstly with your David Bondo account, and then your Oconomo account.

If you’re going to be lazy enough to copy and paste the same comments, don’t be surprised if people notice that behaviour and complain about you abusing the posting rules – and it’s noticeable that you’re not even trying to deny that you’re doing it, you’re just trying to distract attention now that posters are complaining in the hope that you might get away with it.

        3. @anon
Lol, so when you run out of arguments, you start crying about troll accounts? Hilarious.

          1. Oconomo, and yet you don’t actually seem to be all that interested in trying to distance yourself from those other accounts – instead, you seem to prefer to throw out insults in a way that gives the impression you’re just trying to distract attention away from the original complaint and trying to avoid people comparing the posting behaviour of those accounts.

If anything, your pattern of behaviour in this thread only reinforces the impression that you are rather happy to engage in trolling and would resort to using alternative accounts to prevent you being blocked from this site by then spreading that abuse over multiple accounts.

        4. Ricciardo ran from a fight. There’s nothing controversial about that. You don’t leave a car that can win the odd race to go a team that hasn’t won since about 2008.

Verstappen was really getting on top of him in 2018.

      2. @abananasplitz

    2. Nobody can compete in that toxic environment created by Helmut Marko, the team is built around Max, the second driver is just a afterthought and having a hard to drive car dosn’t help either. Daniel realized that and got out, at first i didn’t understand his decision, now i do.

    3. @David Bondo

I could not have said it any better!

      1. Omg, this is even more hilarious…..Ababananagespritzt is F1oclown, is Anon, is Zann and David Bondo……
Guess the supply of meds is running out.
Love you guys, made my day :)

        1. Anon, you rather gave yourself away with your rather obvious lack of arguments and finger pointing to other people and the consistent lowering the bar of proper discussions.

If you’re going to be dumd and lazy enough to copy and paste the same comments, don’t be surprised if people notice that behaviour and complain about you abusing the posting rules – and it’s noticeable that you’re not even trying to deny that you’re doing it, you’re just trying to distract attention now that posters are complaining in the hope that you might get away with it.

          1. oconomo troll

  4. I don’t understand how easily people swallow the green excuse by Honda.
A manufacturer that races in 2 pure ice series, isn’t competing in Formula E, has no interest in MotoE and is leaving a hybrid series.

Sounds far more like a cost-benefit thing than anything else.

  5. That picture.. ouch!

    1. De leg bone’s connected …um

    2. Yeah, that shattered bone made me feel a tad unwell just from seeing it.

  6. Re COTD. F1 is about regulation formula. Either the PU, chassis, or the aero.

They could change the formula to other formula anytime when it seems only benefited one manufacturer for a year or two. But they didn’t do it.

No new engine manufacturer would willing to join knowing they’re at least seven years behind. The remaining manufacturer would see there’s no benefit to continue knowing the gap is kept getting bigger.

  7. Thanks Keith for the COTD! Also glad to see people actually considering it a viable idea worth discussing. Thanks guys!

  8. In regards to COTD…hydrogen electric hybrid is the way to go for F1. It will bring back Honda and even get Toyota in the mix.

    1. Depends. If you are talking about hydrogen fuel cells then I disagree because that is just EV but with the power coming from hydrogen. Too close to what Formula E is already doing. If you are talking about hydrogen internal combustion engines of some form, in combination with electric motors similar to today, then maybe. My point was that as long as they settle for one ICE then that can be anything we choose it to be. It surely should run on any form of renewable or bio fuel, possibly hydrogen. As long as everyone uses the same ICE it can be as noisy, cheap, powerful, eco-friendly as we choose it to be. As long as there is no development war involved for that part of the power unit.
Not all manufacturers are looking into making hydrogen vehicles specifically, but I am sure regenerative hybrid systems will be part of all future drivetrains. So, focusing on letting manufacturers develop the hybrid parts should cater to more manufacturers in my mind, whilst keeping the sport interesting.

  9. I have to admit that i do agree in part that Ric seems to have run from a fight even though to me it seemed “fixed”. Its like Bottas leaving mercs. Not that the mercs fight are fixed. But that 1 shouldnt leave a possible race winning team to go to a lower level team. Although i do also feel for a Ric. When u cant trust your team to give you equal opportunity, equal machines then the clouds of doubt can affect you.

  10. Fingers crossed Théo Pourchaire makes it into F2 next year. Just turned 17 and massive potential. Massive.
