  1. Has to be Lando. To be honest, that final lap was probably enough to clinch it on it’s own. Then add onto that the mega race he had, plus an awesome qualifying.

    1. Carlos Sainz Jr, what else.

  2. I chose Lando. I think he really got the maximum out of his car and did everything to claim that podium! But I think that it was close between him and Bottas. Afterall, Bottas almost got the triple, only failing because of that amazing last lap dash for FLAP by Norris.

  3. I think either driver on the podium kind of deserved this and it’s not the first race this happens!

But after all, bottas ofc beat hamilton in qualifying which is no small feat, he’s normally strong in austria (bottas), but with the 2 penalties hamilton wasn’t as much a threat as usual, and mercedes has no competition apart from that, on the other hand norris brought a mclaren which is still not like the 1998-2008 one on the podium and leclerc dragged an uncompetitive ferrari to 2nd place.

I was most impressed by leclerc, hence voted for him, it really goes to show that if the car sucks, you can be vettel and do nothing or you can make the best of a bad situation like leclerc.

  4. Bottas. He managed to deny Lewis pole by going off track. He managed to deny Lewis podium by slowing down. He managed to do that all without controversy.

    1. @ruliemaulana Time to take the tinfoil hat off.

      1. @mashiat Yeah. I just hoping that the case. But you’re right. Bottas was too weak to do such things.

    2. @ruliemaulana and merc kept bottas ahead, no team orders, all for relieability.

  5. Bottas, Leclerc and Norris were all impressive.

Bottas out qualified Hamilton and got off to a great start and controlled the race, but I don’t think he was tested much with Hamilton’s penalty pushing him down the starting grid, and with Verstappen starting on mediums. But to give Bottas credit, he didn’t put a foot wrong all weekend and handled the safety car restarts like a boss. The only negative was that Hamilton’s race pace looked far better than his.

Leclerc was stellar all weekend. He maximised his quality performance and was really punchy in the race against the Mclarens and Force India. I don’t think he could have done any more to maximise the Ferrari’s full potential. He showed great pace and race craft despite his car being a handful.

Norris put in the strongest qualifying lap of the weekend to put that Mclaren ahead of a Red Bull in qualifying. He held his own against quicker cars behind him and put in the crucial overtake on Perez and the fastest lap of the race to get between 5 seconds of Hamilton, and his maiden podium. He made Sainz, who had a pretty good weekend as well, look mediocre.

For me, it was a close call between Leclerc and Norris, but went with Norris just because his qualifying lap and fastest lap of the race were super impressive. If I had to choose – #1 Norris, #2 Leclerc , #3 Bottas

  6. DOTW: BOT
    DOTD: NOR

    1. I was thinking DOTW-Norris and DOTD-Leclerc, but your choice is equally valid. Bottas was very solid. winning without being the quickest guy on track is a pretty good performance. he nailed all of the restarts and made no errors that I saw. but he will need some luck and/or to be quicker in the subsequent races to have any chance against hamilton, though the short season definitely gives him a shot.

  7. Chose Lando but i was tempted to chose Bottas.

  8. Very close this one. Bottas beat Hamilton convincingly which is no mean feat. Leclerc made that signature RIC lunge on Perez. And then Lando of course. Went for him at the end because he qualified well and also made a good move on Perez just when he had to and earned the podium with that final lap.

  9. All three podium finishers deserve it.
Bottas, because he led from start to finish, didn’t make any obvious mistakes and did great re-starts.
Leclerc, because he drove a very clean race, defended his position against Sainz despite being low on topspeed and overtook Norris and Perez, who had quicker cars.
Norris, obviously because of his stunning final lap with which he secured his maiden podium, holding Perez behind him in the 1st stint and re-passing him in the final stages of the race.

In the end I went with Bottas, because he was the only one not to benefit from a SC and because he had to nurse his car home, not knowing if it would make it to the end, but still drive fast enough to keep the guys on fresh mediums behind him.

  10. I voted Bottas, then I remembered about Norris, but still Bottas. He is in a fight of his lifetime, doing just enough to win. He is within 1% of being a world champion. This was an incredibly important win for him.

As the DotW needs to beat his teammate over the weekend it cannot be Bottas or Albon.
Verstappen and Ricciardo did not have enough of a race to merrit a serious consideration
The obvious candidates are then Norris and Leclerc. Of these 2 Norris was the most outstanding IMO.
I just want to metion Gassly as well. We did not see a lot of him, but that was more due to the car than his performance.

In the end, I chose Norris.

    1. @coldfly Bottas outqualified Hamilton and led every lap en route to victory. I’m not sure how Bottas did not “beat his teammate over the weekend”, unless you are counting free practice, which is irrelevant.

      1. I was probably a bit harsh on Bottas, but I did not rate him as convincingly outperforming Hamiton this weekend.
It’s very subjective, but that’s the prerogative we have here. I should have argued it differently though.

          @coldfly
I’d also add that is was only the practice sessions where Bottas was beaten. Q1, Q2 Q3 and every single lap, Bottas was ahead. But fair enough – you did say you could have put it differently.

I do however think Norris was the main stand out driver this weekend.
Leclerc was solid, but was barely any quicker than Vettel in Q2 and nearly got knocked out too. In the race, I doubt leclerc will have found a way by the Norris or Perez without the safety car helping change things. Earlier on, Leclerc was either falling back or maintaining 2 – 3 seconds behind them and it was only the safety car, retirements and Perez’s unlucky strategy that helped him close up enough to get DRS and get by. What he did really well was capitalise on the opportunities and show his overtaking skills . But he gained all of his places due to one of these points helping him out. He didn’t really close the gap himself.

I think Bottas has as good a reason to be voted as well as Leclerc as the safety car constantly closed the gaps (even if brief) he had built up and he handled the pressure of constant restarts and his team mates pressure pretty well.

But as I implied, I went with Norris in the end.

  12. GG Lando

  13. It has to be Leclerc. Grabbed that Ferrari by the scruff of the neck just to get into Q3 before pulling off an Alonso-esque drive to get on the podium. Made the decision to drop Vettel look pretty fair.

  14. For me, the men on the podium stand out clearly.
With a more detailed analysis of the binomial: driver / car, I have to choose Leclerc as 1st.
Arrived at the 1st race of the year, after the shock of the first two free practices, confirmed in qualification, in the face of such adversity, he always showed a mature attitude, of great character, always on the positive side. He never let himself be shaken by the signs. And the pressure, well, enormous. The race came, full focus, he knew how to capitalize on all the opportunities that the race gave him. With the result obtained, aware of the difficulties ahead, he assumes the role of leader, encouraging the team.
    I mean, I think it’s remarkable
2nd Norris, what a great race too. Great relaxation, total and clear focus, he also knew how to take advantage of what the race provided him. And well, those last two laps, great determination and commitment, and you reach 3rd place on the podium. For the first time in F1. Amazing.
3rd Bottas, great weekend, since the free sessions, keeping the level high, waiting for the moment to inflict the first damages on his main rival. Achieved the first objective, focus on the race, knows well that it can be the last opportunity to become world champion. First round, crucial, achieved. Very well.

Bottas, Norris, Albon, Magnussen & Gasly impressed me the most.

  16. Leclerc, of course. Who else?
With the worse car of the 5 best teams he was second.
    A future champion.

  17. I voted Norris as charles is no stranger to the top, however charles was faultless I’m surprised he didn’t get dow

  18. My driver of the weekend was Norris, great performances in both the qualifying and race to earn himself his first podium also putting in the fastest lap on the final lap.

Second would be Bottas, Hamilton was quicker in practice but Bottas was the faster of the two when it mattered in qualifying, Hamilton’s grid penalty meant Bottas was able to build a big enough cushion in the race to not be troubled and even when the safety cars wiped out that gap he controlled the race to take the victory.

  19. My driver ratings for the Austrian Grand Prix Weekend (based on the Autosport scoring system):
    Lewis Hamilton – 7
    Valtteri Bottas – 9
    Charles Leclerc – 9
    Sebastian Vettel – 4
    Max Verstappen – 8
    Alexander Albon – 8
    Carlos Sainz – 7
    Lando Norris – 10
    Daniel Ricciardo – 8
    Esteban Ocon – 6
    Pierre Gasly – 8
    Daniil Kvyat – 6
    Sergio Perez – 8
    Lance Stroll – 6
    Kimi Raikkonen – 6

    Nicholas Latifi – 6
