It was a one-off race held for the opening of the new Nurburgring. Everybody competed with the same car and that was what has made it special for Senna because at that time he was relatively unknown in the higher classes of auto racing. The fact that he managed to beat every world class drivers of that era – including Lauda and Prost – given the same conditions confirmed him as one of the quickest driver of his generation. Besides Monaco 1984 this was the race based on which he has been considered one of the brightest new talents of Formula 1.

He didn’t really beat Prost. Prost took the pole for this race, and Senna pushed him out of the track on the first corner. Prost finished among the last
